Enterprise Resource Planning

Process choices

The issues are often not how to run MRP or even how to optimize it, but rather should the planning/execution environment use Lean manufacturing techniques or even the theory of constraints rather than an MRP system.

To fully implement an ERP system relies more on understanding the business processes, recommending improvements where necessary, and to be able to talk to the ERP support about the best way to implement those processes.

ERP Systems – Optimization

Body of knowledge / Best Manufacturing Practices
The major reason that ERP systems fail or do not give the results expected or hoped for is that the inputs to the system are not correct or accurate. An obvious example would be trying to utilize an MRP system with BOM’s that are not accurate or Planning data (lead times, safety stock, order quantities etc.) that is not correct.

Experience
Experience, for example, of what causes inventory inaccuracies (procedures, timing etc.) would be more beneficial than a knowledge of the application’s inventory and material management screens.
